Have you ever been to the Sedgwick County Fair?  If you haven’t or it’s been a long time, this is the year to get back out the Cheney, KS to see what you’re missing!

g2g Outside is putting on a County Fair Scavenger Hunt!  The hunt goes from 6p-8p on Thursday, July 7, 2011.  Our table will be just north of the softball diamond in front of the 4-H Exhibit Hall.  All kids who complete the hunt will recieve one FREE Sno-Cone!  This is a great way to see all the fun animals, games, attractions and events going on at Your County Fair!

The Parade is also Thursday evening starting at 7pm.  So come early for the hunt, and stay for the festivities.  There is something fun going on every day of the Fair so check out the schedule here.

See you in Cheney!

Pictures remind us of what has happened - where we’ve been, who we’ve been there with and what we went through. One of my favorite pictures of all time is one of my brother, my mom and I sitting on our front porch swing laughing our heads off. No one is looking at the camera, no one is smiling “nicely”, and it’s in an 14×18 frame hanging in my office at home.

Pictures tell a great story. So you’re job today is to tell YOUR story. You don’t need to submit your photos to us – this isn’t a competition of any kind. It’s simply for you, for your family and for the generations to come to enjoy these memories.

Here’s how you do it. Pick up a camera (digital is my personal favorite because you can take as many as you want without the fear of “will they turn out?” or “am I wasting too much film”?), gather together your family or your neighborhood buddies and find a spot that is really meaningful to you. My favorite place at home is our back patio. My husband and I spend almost every night out there – so when we take pictures at home, I almost always take them out there!

Some basic photography principles:

-Consider the angle of the sun (if you are taking your photo outdoors). If you don’t have lots of photo equipment, it’s best to take your photos in shade or in shadow. I like to take pictures with the sun behind me (so it’s on the front side of the person). Even if they have a little bit of squinty eye syndrome, it’s better than a dark face and a bright background!

-Frame your photo into thirds. If you are taking a landscape photo, frame it into three sections so that the person’s face is off to one side, the center or the other side. Some of the most interesting photos are where the person is off to one side and you are able to capture some of the background. If you are taking a portrait photo (“up and down”)- same thing. three sections. Either put the person’s face at the top of the frame, near the center or towards the bottom. The only time you would want to put the person towards the bottom of the frame would be to capture a beautiful sky or a tall building behinds. Otherwise, the person’s face always goes at the top of the frame (literally only a small sliver of landscape above their head).

-Distance from the object. If you want to take photos of your vegetable or flower garden at home, or bugs in your backyard take them up CLOSE. Use the “Macro” setting on your camera if you have one and don’t be afraid to get too close with objects. With people – you can decide! I like to take pictures of babies up close (they are so cuddly and cozy!) and like to take pictures of large groups of people a little further back.

-Time of day. The best time of day for photos is early in the morning (dawn) or right before the sun sets (dusk). The color from the sun is the richest, the opportunity for blasting sun in the eyes is minimal and you can get some really cool shadows! (Plus – it’s not as hot this time of day either!)

Phew. That should do it!  Some great places to take photos in your neighborhood might be – your backyard, front porch swing, tree house, flower garden, veggie garden, big tree, swingset, pickett fence, and many more! GO EXPLORE! Here are a few of my pictures :)

(Same baby, same area of the house, but the light in the upper picture is coming straight forward on the baby, and at the bottom the light is coming in from the side creating a more “dramatic” lighting photo).

g2g Outside is Playing in the Park tomorrow, June 21 from 6p-7p in North Linwood Park.  Bring friends and neighbors and let’s play outside together.  We’ll be playing some old fashion games along with a few you may not have played before.  We hope to inspire outdoor play all summer long!

Mark yor calendars for next Tuesday from 6p-7p.  We added another g2g Outside event!  Play in the Park, June 21 at Linwood Park.  We’re going to play some outdoor games you can take home and play with neighbor kids and your family the rest of the summer.  Bring friends and join us!

The WATER Center is hosting a River Festival event today from 3p-7p at Herman Hill Park on the corner of Pawnee and Broadway.  Kids and families are invited to come out to make fish prints, check out the critters that live in the creek, and tour the museum.  The park also has frisbee golf and a great playground.

Come out and enjoy the cooler weather (it’s only going to be 95!)  :)

Again, with the heat wearing light colored clothing, suncreen and bringing LOTS of water is important.

We’ll see you at the WATER Center!

Join us any time between 3p and 7p tonight right next to the Riverside Tennis Center.  g2g will be leading 5 fun outdoor games for kids and their families at River Fest.  If you participate in at least 3 of the games you can enter to win and AMAZING family outside prize pack!!!

GAMES: 1)  Meet a Tree  2)  Tree Mad Grab  3) Frisbees!  4)  Chinese Jump Rope  5)  StoryTime

It is going to be HOT today so please wear light colored cool clothing, bring a water bottle, drink often, and wear sun screen.

We’ll see you there!

Pick a day to take your family outside for fun and healthy eating.  There are a number of local places that you can go “pick your own” fruits and vegetables.  It is a memory that will last a lifetime.

Kids that take part in the growing and picking of fruits and veggies eat more of these nutritious foods than kids who are not part of “the process.”

In a jam trying to figure out where to go?  Try picking strawberries at Jester Creek Farm near Newton, KS.  Call Sharon to set up a time to visit and pick, 316-284-0363.

You will need to bring your own containers to take your berries home. Shallow containers are best to protect the berries.  The 2011 price is $2.00/quart + sales tax.

Hope you have a berry good time!

Earth Day is this Friday, April 22.  I’m going to celebrate Earth Day this year by riding my bike to work at least one day this week.

You and your family can celebrate Earth Day by doing something to “go green“.  Or, you can learn something new about our planet.  Learning helps us appreciate, and when we appreciate we then want to protect.  g2g Outside thinks that when kids play outside they learn to love the outdoors.  Then, when our kids grow up they will want to make wise environmental decisions.

What are you and your family going to do for Earth Day this year?

  • Walk to the store/school
  • Start recycling something you haven’t recycled in the past
  • Find a new park to play in
  • Learn recognize a new plant or tree
  • Plant something
  • Invite your friends to play outside with you
  • Pick up trash in your neighborhood
  • Attend the Earth Day Kansas event at the Zoo on Thursday!

The Sedgwick County Zoo celebrates Earth Day with a free Zoo event,  Thursday, April 21 from 9a-2p.  There will be an environmental fair where you can learn how to protect and care for the world we live in. With hands-on activities and interactive exhibits, there are many learning opportunities for children.  Activities are geared towards third through fifth grade, but all are welcome.

Tuesday night we had a great time at the Great Plains Nature Center.  If you weren’t able to make it out, you can go hike the trail at the Nature Center this weekend and hunt for the signs of spring with your family.  You can also hunt for these signs on your block or a park near you.

  1. Burned grass - the Nature Center and other nature areas on our state burn grass as a way to maintain the natural Kansas tall and short grass prairie.  The fire kills invading trees and shrubs, removes dead grass to let in more sunlight, and the leaf-ash is fertilizer for the new grass and wildflowers.  You can see new green grass already sprouting through the ashes.
  2. Orange tips on Red Cedar Trees - These are the male flowers.  If you flick them you will see clouds of yellow pollen.  The female trees still have blue berries left from last year.
  3. Turtles - Ponds are starting to wake up.  Turtles are coming up from their long winter hibernation in the mud at the bottom of the pond.
  4. Green Leaves - Can you find green leaves on grass, trees, bushes, flowers, and more?
  5. Birds - Birds are singing up a storm right now.  Great Horned Owls and Red-tailed Hawks are already nesting.  Other birds are getting ready to nest.  Can you see them flying around and gathering supplies?

Thank you to Patty at the Great Plains Nature Center for the fun Hunt for Signs of Spring List.

Are you looking for a fun adventure for your family?  Join the Kansas Herpetological Society (KHS) for their Spring Field Trip, April 8-10!

Herpetology is the study of reptiles and amphibians.  This year’s KHS trip will be to Sedan City Lake in Chautauqua County, KS.  The purpose of this event is to count as many turtles, salamanders, snakes, frogs, etc as possible.  Counts go from 9am-5pm on Saturday and 9am to noon on Sunday.  This family friendly event gets all ages out exploring, watching, and counting together.  Families that go on KHS field trips once make it top priority to go year after year.

There are opportunities to camp or stay in nearby hotels.  Check out the KHS’s webpage for details, maps, and event information.
