Herb Day at the Farmer’s Market

Herb Day is going on this Saturday, May 5, at the Sedgwick Co Extension Office from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Herb of the Year is Roses, so come learn how to eat roses and otherwise use them as an herb!

We’ll have a special kids activity in the Bison Room where kids can make rose-scented bath salts.

The Kansas Grown! Farmers Market will be in the parking lot, with lots for kids of all ages to see, hear, smell, and taste.

If you need a break from the craziness, you can always print off or download the g2g Nature Trail Scavenger Hunt and enjoy some peace and quiet out on our nature trail.

  1. All those wonderful g2g Outside events for Spring & Summer 2012!  Click HERE for a list of times and places for our g2g events this year.
  2. April 30 – Youth Volunteer Day at the WATER  Center.  Ages 8-15.  Register here.
  3. June 1-9 – Wichita River Festival, lots of community activities down by the Arkansas River.
  4. June 23 – Great American Backyard Campout - more idea, links, etc coming on this blog and on the NWF website.

Storytime at the WATER Center on Valentine’s Day

Show your kiddo how much you love them by taking them out for Storytime at the WATER Center Tuesday February 14 from 10am-11am. 

Join the WATER Center Staff for a free storytime and nature activity.  February the story is Big Al by Yoshi and the activity is “Fish Friends!”  The program is designed for Pre-K aged children, but all are welcome to attend.

The WATER Center is located in Herman Hill Park on the corner of Pawnee and Broadway. Due to contruction at Pawnee & Broadway, please access Herman Hill park via McClean and Pawnee. 

You can park in the lot by the playground or behind the WATER Center building.  The building has fountains out front.  Wander up the path towards the fountains and enter the building for storytime.  After storytime you can play in the museum or hike along the streamside paths towards the Arkansas River.

Parents Night Out Cancelled

Due to too few registrations we are cancelling g2g Parents Night Out that was to be Monday, Feb 6.  We will make future blog posts with information and ideas that were going to be presented during this event.

Parents, have you been carting your kids around to THEIR activities?  Are you ready for a night where the evening is designed just for you?  Well here you go!

g2g Outside is hosting a Parent’s Night Out on February 6th, 6:30-8:30pm.   We will provide an evening with refreshments, a bit of education, some lively discussion, and a few fun activities or ideas that you can take home and use.

The purpose of the evening is to give parents the time and space to talk about how outdoor play shapes children and benefits them.  We will trade ideas and activities that we use to engage kids in nature.

The event is free.  But, we ask that you please register here

g2g Stargaze

This Friday, January 13, g2g Outside invites your family to the Lake Afton Observatory  Just off McArthur Rd (north) near 247th St W, in Lake Afton Park (3 miles south and 3 miles west of Goddard). 

We will meet at 7:15pm in order to catch the program at 7:30.  We will participate in the Women in Astronomy Program, check out what wonders we can see in space from the 16-inch telescope, then we can learn even more in the hands-on museum. 

Kids and adults can be awestruck with the vastness and fantastic objects that can be found in space.  This may be a trip that sparks a lifelong love of the night-sky or desire to pursue a career in science.  Don’t miss out!

Your family is welcome to stay as long as you’d like, Observatory closes at 10pm.  Dress for cold weather, the observatory (the room with the telescope) is not heated.  You can warm up in the museum.

The first 50 participants get in Free, courtesy of g2g Outside.  After the first 50, entrance fees are on your own.  $5 adults, $3 kids 6-12, 6 & under are free.

During this telescope session we’re going to see:  Jupiter, a giant blue star, a supernova remnant, a nebula and a spiral galaxy.

Seedmore Sockhands – Thursday, g2g Outside Plays in Herman Hill Park

Come out to Herman Hill Park to the WATER Center on the corner of Pawnee and Broadway to Play in the Park with g2g Outside!  Click here for map to park.

With the help of Seedmore Sockhands we are going to explore the world of seeds through art, hikes, and outdoor games.

Dress for the weather, we will be spending time outdoors.  Since we’re not used to cooler temperatures, gloves, hats, jackets, tennis shoes (no flip flops) might be in order.  By February 40-50 degrees will feel like shorts weather.

Join g2g and all our friends from 6p-7p, Thursday, November 3.

g2g Catch Bugs with the Bug Lady TONIGHT!

Tonight (Tuesday, Oct 11) join us to hunt insects, observe them, identify then, learn about what insects eat and what eats them, and play bug inspired games!  

g2g has invited the Bug Lady to come and teach us all about bugs!

We will meet at 6pm at Sedgwick County Park, northside, next to Kid’s Pond (follow the g2g signs).  We will play until 7:30p.  See you there!

Bug Lady Open House

The Bug Lady will be at our next g2g event on Tuesday, Oct 11 in Sedgwick County Park.  But, if you have time this Saturday check out her Open House!

The Bug Lady’s Science Academy will be having an Open House in their new building.  Make sure you stop by to see all the insects and animals along with tons of fun science experiments to do. It will be on Saturday, October 8th from 10 am to 2 pm. Fun prizes to give away like free presentations, birthday parties, and so much more!
